One Week!

So we're one week away from the Communities Conference. Yayyy.

Today the port-a-potties were delivered! One regular and one handicap accessible.

The 'Tarp Situation' has been resolved. Thanks to Rob, the Yurt will now have a covering! He was so kind to help us out and get us one.

Ethan and I sorted through and put up some signs that need putting up at the conference site, and we also hung up our 'Registration' sign. It was really exciting to see it hanging up.

All of our workshops are scheduled and a list of them is on our home page. A new thing that has been added to our program this year is a Contra Dance, accompanied by a live band from Twin Oaks, set to happen on Friday evening. It's gonna be great.

We've had some random weather recently...104 degrees Fahrenheit the other day, a wild thunder storm last night that knocked the power out several times, but coming back on within a few hours each time.

Weather.com says that for Friday, the high'll be 87 degrees, partly cloudy, with a low of 62 degrees. Saturday, the high'll be 88 degrees, sunny with a low of 61. Sunday, high of 84 with a low of 63, sunny. There's 10% chance of Rain for all 3 days. Cross your fingers, hope the forecast is right, and that it doesnt change between now and then!

Off to do some stuff, then some things and then more stuff.
And if I don't see ya later, good afternoon, good evening and good night!
Have a great week!

2 Weeks to go, and Where In the World is...Our Large Tarp?

Tomorrow, Friday, will be 2 weeks away from our Communities Conference. *Exciting!* Exciting, and soon.

Yesterday I was up at the Conference site, doing some prep with a few visitors, and it's starting to look a lot more like we'll be having a conference soon. It's kinda nerve-wracking since a lot of things can only happen during these several weeks ahead of time. I know it's gonna be great.

However, we are missing a tarp. Which is incredibly odd. No clue where it is. It's a pretty important one, too. It'll go over the (slowly deteriorating and becoming a lot less like a) Yurt. We may have to buy a new one.. Yuck. Oh well, we'll solve this problem.

If you have any questions- any concerns that may keep you from attending the conference- please feel free to contact me personally through this site, or contact conference@twinoaks.org .

Hope to see ya'll soon!

-Suede

P.S. The other day I had my one year anniversary of living at Twin Oaks...yay!!!

32 Days and Counting!

Wow. 32 days. Didn't i just post something yesterday that said the Conference was 8 weeks away? How time flies.

Site prep is happening twice a week for 3 hours for now. It'll start picking up as the weeks pass. The campsites are cleared out. We're working on clearing paths and the kids play area. Working on general maintenance.

Next week, we'll be having people going in to Charlottesville and Richmond to post up fliers.

I'm getting kinda excited and slightly anxious. It'll be great.

In community,
Suede Machete

I've been to many Twin Oaks Community Conferences

I've been to many TO Community Conferences over the years, and I think it's terrific for community seekers and people living in community. Every year I find out about more communities, and it seems the reach gets further - some years ago it was pretty much Virgina and surrounding states represented. At this point it's most of the East Coast and the South East, plus a few other people that come from afar to represent their communities and enjoy.

For seekers, it is an excellent way to get a taste of a whole bunch of communities, and narrow down the ones they actually want to visit, assuming they don't have time to visit them all. The workshops give you an idea about some of the issues, concerns, and consciousness surrounding the movement now. Also the FIC books are there to browse, and lots of experienced people to ask about communities that fit your particular iwants and needs.

For communitarians, it's sort of like a family reunion - you get to catch up with old friends, find out about new communities nad projects, make new friends, see what new books and media the FIC has for sale, hang out in the country and enjoy. Also of course to go to the workshops to find out about what other peole are thinking about and working on.

And of course, It's fun!

8 Weeks from Today....

Wow. In exactly 8 weeks, the Communities Conference will be starting.

I think it's just starting to hit me how soon it really is to the date of the Conference. For someone attending, it may seem like ages away. But for me, with coordinating it and prepping the site, it's getting very close.

Tomorrow Sky, Ethan and myself will be heading up to the conference site where Sky will give us an orientation on prepping the site. On Sunday Ethan and I are scheduled to head up to the site with a few helpers and get started on actual prepping.

Today was a beautiful day and we had our 'Core' group meeting outside. It was great. It'd be wonderful to continue having this kinda weather for a while. Hopefully we'll luck out with weather at the Conference. Cross your fingers.

Well, off to be slightly distracted for a little while, then coming back to reality and working on some more conference stuff.

In Community,

P.S. Twin Oaks turned 40 years old last week! Woohoo!

What's happening behind the scenes of the Communities Conference?

Here's what's been happening for the past couple months-

Promotion:

- Last month we sent out our mass snail-mailing. Lots of address labels and circle stickers on lots of pages. I never realized before that real people actually put those stickers on by hand- not just a machine.
- Bucket's been working on this site, making it more user friendly and viewer friendly. We're hoping to promote this site more.
- I've created a new logo (though still slightly unpolished), hopefully to be used for next years promotion, as this year's promo work has already been sent out with the old logo.

Core Group:

The core group consisted of Ivy, Drea and myself, but recently Drea decided that she'd be leaving Twin Oaks, though she'll still be in the area. Drea is still interested in helping out for the weeks leading up to the conference and at the actual conference, but it seemed a bit silly to try and arrange her schedule to be here for our meetings (our meeting dates change from week to week). So, we have a new member of the core group (also a new member to the community), so now it is Ivy, Caroline and myself. Caroline was an intern last year and helped prepare for the conference, so she'll be a big help toward making this happen. She's already done something very important- pre-ordered the port-a-potties (yay!).

-We've been overseeing the Promo group, trying to make sure things are moving along as they need to.
- 7 Workshops have been scheduled so far.

Site Prep:

-I've learned how to turn the water and electricity on and off at the conference site.
-Ethan will be my second in command to do with site prep, which will probably need to start happening soon.
- As previously mentioned, port-a-potties have been ordered.

That's all for now folks,
<3 Suede Machete

Who is this 'Suede Machete,' anyway?

Hey ya'll, Suede Machete here. I've been living at Twin Oaks for just over 10 months now. I helped prepare the conference site last year, and this year I'm one of the people in charge of making the Communities Conference happen.

Here's a brief background of myself....I'm 21 years old. Was raised in New Hampshire. My first time moving away from home was to come to Twin Oaks. I have attended one Communities Conference (2006). I worked cleaning houses, before that in a craft store, and before that as an Au Pair.

For me, communities are where it's at. I feel privileged to have been let in on this way of living at what seems to be such a young age. Which is one reason why I'm passionate about the Communities Movement and spreading word about communal living.

So. I'm part of the 'Core' group that makes decisions about the conference and keeps everyone on task and arranges all the big things that will happen at the conference. I also do promotion work. I'm also 'Site Prep Coordinator.' In the weeks preceding the conference, I (with the help of others) will be making the conference site a comfortable place to be, set up workshop areas, smoking areas, camping sites, toilets- you name it, and I've gotta make sure it's all ready for the Conference.

So this is an intro to who I am...and I'll be posting blogs about what's been going on with our progress toward the 2007 Communities Conference.

If you've got any questions about the conference, Twin Oaks, or even about where in NH I grew up, feel free to send me an e-mail at SuedeMachete@yahoo.com .

Only 12 Weeks until the Communities Conference!

Twelve weeks left?!? That's it?

Sometimes it feels like I move at a rate independent of consensus reality time. Like, I'm mentally still plowing through March, but the calendars are about to tell me it's June. Hmm. Very curious. Well, the conference is approaching fast, and life here continues along at its usual somewhat bipolar pace -- that is, days of double-digit working hours where every second of my time is claimed for this job or that job, watching children or making tofu or gardening till I'm ready to collapse at the day's end; then those lazy days of sleeping in and making pancakes, of lounging by the pond or swimming in the river, breathing deep and taking it all in, thinking how grateful I am to no longer be in Boston...anyway.

Yeah, preparations for the conference are kinda snowballing now. We're gonna start to prepare the conference site soon, I believe, which was just utilized for a pretty big and reeaaaallllll fun rave we had a couple days ago. The site really is beautiful, I love the big fire circle in the middle. Great vibes there. I foresee a very busy summer...preparing for the conference, as well as the Women's Gathering which happens a week later and for which I'm, at this point, singlehandedly running childcare (though hopefully that'll change as I recruit more people...yeah, gotta get on that...), I'm going to Dancing Rabbit community in Missouri to do labor exchange (they're also part of the Federation of Egalitarian Communities, as is Twin Oaks, so I can go there and do labor, which gets transferred to my labor balance here, it's pretty cool), plus a handful of other somewhat big things....

Ok. Well, life is getting busier and busier but the fruit's starting to come in -- we're knee high in strawberries at this point, soon to be followed by blueberries, mulberries, raspberries, blackberries, watermelons, cantaloupes, apples and pears -- for myself at least I notice a huge correlation between quantity of available fruit and quality of life. Mmmmmmmmm fruit. I love the summer. It's gorgeous here. Well, that's all for now I think. More to come later!

Love Ivy

Twin Oaks Community, The FEC and The FIC presents the

2009 Communities Conference

August 14-16, 2009

Twin Oaks Community

Louisa, VA

This conference is a networking and learning opportunity for anyone interested or involved in
cooperative or communal lifestyles.

  • Intentional relationships
  • Group process
  • Collective child raising
  • Creating culture
  • Forming communities
  • Sustainability
  • Appropriate technology
  • Community economics
  • Music, dancing
  • Slide shows
  • Campfires, swimming
  • Magic
  • The Schedule: The conference begins late afternoon/suppertime on Friday. Activiites are scheduled throughout the weekend, and will either be posted elsewhere on this page, or email us for details.

What to Expect: We invite people to get together and talk about intentional community of all sorts. We expect about 200 participants including members of many communities: large, small, spiritual, secular, tightly communal, loosely cooperative, and so on. We also welcome people looking for a community, and those just interested in the idea of cooperative living. This conference will be lightly structured. Everything is optional. There will be workshops and sharing circles, but also lots of time to just hang out, meet people, network and play together.

What is Twin Oaks? This conference is hosted by Twin Oaks, a community of 100 people living on 450 acres of farm and forestland in central Virginia. Founded in 1967, we share communal income and property, a labor credit system, and a self-sufficient economy. Tours will be available during the conference. The community is off-limits except during tours.

Facilities And What To Bring: Our gathering site is rustic but has showers (often hot), hammocks, picnic tables, a fire circle and a kitchen. There are tent sites in the woods nearby (and space for a few small RVs, but call ahead). No electricity for individual use. You will need a tent, sleeping bag, toiletries, flashlight, towel, rain gear, mixed-season clothes, and good natured flexibility. No pets, please. You may want to bring musical instruments, toys, games, and any outreach literature (brochures, feature articles, slideshows, photos, videos, etc.) you might have about your community, if you live in one. Child care will be cooperative: we will arrange space for parents and others to share child care.

About Food: Food will be predominantly potluck. Twin Oaks will provide breakfasts, bread, milk, yogurt, salad, and much more. We ask you to bring three things to share:
1.) a refrigerated covered dish (stew, casserole, soup, but not chili), preferably frozen,
    2.) some fruit, and
3.) a snack item or juice.
Each should be enough for 10 hungry people.

Who we are: This conference is sponsored by two different inter-community organizations. The Fellowship for Intentional Community (FIC) is a loose organization of almost 100 communities in North America. The FIC publishes the Communities Directory and Communities Magazine (you can order them through Twin Oaks). The Federation of Egalitarian Communities (FEC) is a network of groups which hold their land, labor, and other resources in common and are committed to equality, participatory government, ecology, and non-violence.

Benefit Auction: As one of the conference events, we will be holding a fast-paced, high-energy benefit auction for the Fellowship for Intentional Community, publisher of the Communities Directory. Proceeds will help the FIC continue to bring the exciting news of community to a world hungry for it. You can help in two ways: 1) bring items to donate to the auction-- products, crafts, services that can be delivered locally, a weekend stay for two at your luxurious home... use your imagination! 2) bring your wallet--there will be bargains galore, and every dollar spent will be used to make community that much more accessible to those seeking it.communities conference

Where: We are located near Interstate 64, between Charlottesville and Richmond, VA, 100 miles southwest of Washington, DC. We will send you a map and directions after we receive your registration. If you want to carpool, we will try to match drivers and riders until August 19.

To register, complete the registration form
and send it to Twin Oaks.

The conference is often full to capacity--please send your registration form and fee before August 1. We cannot guarantee space to late registrants.
